Trooper SOP: UNIFORM (How to wear a suit)
Pictures must stand the test of time.
Have some dignity and take pride in how you look.
Get sized by a TAILOR for jacket, pants and shirts then buy the correct sizes. A tailor, not a sales rep.
Get a jacket with a conservative collar, single breasted with a little inseam slack for concealed carry weapons. Be thrifty but not cheap and save some of your budget for the tailor. Ideally you’ll get free tailoring when you buy the suit.
Primary Jacket colors are Dark/Medium Grey, Black, Dark/Medium Blue. Brown is reserved for dirty taverns and low skill government employees.
NEVER button the bottom most jacket button.
Get the matching pants. Mix and match is fine for business but dinner dates and formal events always require matching jacket and slacks.
GET THE SUIT TAILORED.
Mix and match pants and jackets. Also mix between primary colors and a pair of Khakis or beige slacks for even more suit combos. This helps when traveling by air with limited carry on space or if you’re on a budget.
Shoes, belt and watchband must be leather AND match.
Shoes are only made of black or brown leather. Polish them.
Wear a watch. Subdued face, handsome but never flashy.
Suspenders & pocket squares are authorized but discouraged. Less is more, remember you’re the gift, your clothes are just the wrapper.
Black or solid socks matched to your tie. Reject goofy themes and patterns, don’t be tacky, be a man.
Shirts are either white, blue or thinly striped on white, always correctly sized. Iron and starch your shirt. Light starch on the body of the shirt, and heavy starch on the collar. Cuff links are acceptable, keep them simple.
Ties must be simple, nothing “loud” or ornate.
Learn the Windsor knot. Clip-on ties are NEVER acceptable.
